I’m an author and journalist interested in financiers, fraudsters, short sellers, shopping malls, cities, corporations and their economic histories. My work exposes how complex financial arrangements are transforming our lives by telling stories about the people and places they shape. I’ve reported from Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, the Channel Islands and both coasts of America. In 2024 my forthcoming book was awarded the Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant. I’m represented by Matt Turner at RCW.

Before joining the Guardian, I worked for the New Statesman as an editor and writer, and as a reporter in Washington D.C., where I covered monopoly power and the Federal Trade Commission. I write regularly for the Guardian Long Read, and my work has been published in the Baffler, the Atlantic, Architectural Review, the Times Literary Supplement and many other places. I have contributed to radio, including the BBC World at One, and chaired panels and Q&As at London’s Design Museum and elsewhere.
