I’m a writer and journalist interested in money, power, and the weird gaps and opportunities that appear when the state retreats. I’ve written about financiers, fraudsters, short sellers, shopping malls, the ineptitude of government regulators, the depredations of private finance, cities, stoicism and other things besides. My work exposes how complex systems and financial arrangements are transforming our lives by telling stories about the people and places they shape.

My debut book, The Asset Class, is a narrative investigation of the private equity industry. It was selected as a Guardian Book of the day, and was awarded a Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant. I’m a writer on the Guardian’s flagship morning newsletter First Edition, and a regular contributor to the Guardian Long Read. My work has been published both in the UK and internationally, and I’m represented by Matt Turner at RCW.

Before joining the Guardian, I worked for the New Statesman as an editor and writer, and as a trade reporter in Washington D.C. I have contributed to various radio shows and podcasts and chaired many panels and Q&As.
